Why Not Me?
2 Cor 12:9
My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.
I had the privilege of having a meal with three WWII vets recently, one of
which is my dad, and the other two who were combatants and survivors of
the Battle of the Bulge. The one theme that kept surfacing from the two
was "Why not me?" They had seen some really gruesome stuff, and
some of their comrades were killed in places where they had just been, or
right next to them. That haunted me, and I had heard about that type of
feeling before, but never first hand. This song was a result of that meeting.
Verse 1
Why them, not me?
All the years have not resolved this mystery
I'm here and I'm still wondering
Why not me?
Verse 2
My soul yet grieves
We stood side by side and faced the enemy
They died and I can't understand
Why not me?
Bridge
The war that took my friends
Still takes my thoughts today
Inches parted life from death
And seconds did the same
Help me, oh Lord, to slay
My hurt and guilt and shame
Your grace is perfect in response
To questions that I face
Verse 3
Why them, not me?
I am weary of the battle to find peace
For now I won't ask myself
Why not me?
